History of Avoyelles Parish
The area that is now known as Avoyelles Parish has been inhabited by Native American tribe since about 300 BC. However, during the late 1700s, a handful of French settlers set up a trading post near the Tunica Indian reservation. Soon after this, they also built a Catholic church and named their small settlement Hydropolis.
When Napoleon sold the state of Louisiana to the U.S., many more immigrants flocked to Hydropolis. This was a diverse group of people including those of both European and African descent. While the exact date is not recorded as to when the area was renamed Avoyelles Parish, it is known that it was named after the Avoyel Indians.
